DOT Physical
A DOT Physical exam determines whether or not a driver is both physically and mentally able to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates the exam to ensure that commercial vehicle drivers can do their job without health problems causing an issue. The health standards are determined by the FMCSA and each DOT physical exam must be conducted by a FMCSA certified medical examiner to ensure all DOT specific requirements and standards are met during each exam. Alltest, Inc.’s DOT medical examiners are extensively trained to understand the regulations ensuring that each DOT physical is completed thoroughly. Drivers who operate the following vehicles in interstate commerce require a DOT physical examination:
- Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 10,001 pounds or more
- Vehicles designed to transport more than 15 passengers, or more than 8 passengers when there is direct compensation involved
- Vehicles transporting hazardous materials that require the vehicle to be placarded under the hazardous materials regulations.
What is required for the physical?
To make sure our medical examiners have everything covered drivers must provide an accurate medical history complete with a:
- List of prescriptions medications, and dosage, you currently take
- Glasses or contact if applicable
- Hearing Aids
- Sleep study and/or Cpap report (3 months at least)
- Labs when applicable
- Additional information as requested by the FMCSA certified medical examiner
How often is a DOT physical required?
A medical examiner is responsible for certifying ONLY drivers who meet the DOT physical standards. This certification cannot exceed 2 years, and at the discretion of the FMCSA medical examiner it may be less than 2 years.
For more information visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Non DOT Pre-placement Physical
Pre-placement physical exams are used to determine if an applicant is capable of performing the requirements of the job. Physical exams can result in lower costs, fewer on-the-job injuries and a better match of employees to jobs.
Many employers also require pre-employment drug screening and CRT Functional Capacity Testing.
Fit-for-Duty Physical
Companies may choose to evaluate a DOT and/or non DOT employee’s ability to perform the duties necessary to do his or job after an injury or illness.
Respirator Medical Clearance
The respirator medical evaluation is used to determine if the employee is medically fit to use a respirator on the job. It is also required by OSHA prior to the employee using the respirator. We offer these services in clinic and on site.
Respirator Fit Testing
We offer qualitative (QLFT) and quantitative fit (QNFT) testing depending on your needs. We offer these services in clinic and on site.
Pulmonary Function Testing (spirometry)
A spirometry breathing test shows how well a person can move air in and out of their lungs. Testing may be performed on employees who perform jobs that are exposed to possible lung hazards, physically demanding, or require wearing a respirator. Spirometry testing is required for some employees by OSHA standards.
Biometric Screening
A biometric screening is a collection of your vital statistics. This type of screening typically measures your BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar. The purpose is to give you information that might indicate risk factors for certain chronic conditions as part of a workplace wellness program.
